Dog costs by state and territory, 2026

The national food, vet and gear averages are the same everywhere. What changes is registration. NSW is a lifetime fee. The ACT fee is territory-wide. Everywhere else, the fee is one named council, because that state does not publish a single fee for every council.

New South Wales

NSW Pet Registry, statewide

One registration fee for the life of the dog, paid through the NSW Pet Registry. It is not an annual council fee, so later years in this calculator are $0.

City of Hobart fees for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. A puppy registered before 6 months pays no fee in the first period, then the annual fee. Not a statewide Tasmanian fee.
