What the national total is

Moneysmart's eight dog lines are food and dietary supplements $1,214, vet services $354, products and accessories $117, pet insurance $145, flea worming and tick treatments $122, grooming training and memberships $353, boarding and transport $96, and walking $119. They sum to $2,520 per dog-owning household. Pets in Australia 2025 says those households have 1.4 dogs on average, and the survey includes owners who spent nothing on a line. A one-dog household may spend less on some lines and more on others. Dividing $2,160 by 1.4 is about $1,543, and that split is a guide only. It is not a silent replacement of the household figure.

$2,520 minus the $145 insurance spend is $2,375. That $2,375 still includes grooming, boarding and walking. The calculator's published default turns boarding and walking off, so those national lines are $2,160 per household, and registration is added on top. Turning boarding and walking back on rebuilds the $2,375. Turning on a Canstar premium does not also add the $145. The $354 vet line stays when insurance is on, because excesses and exclusions can still leave out-of-pocket vet costs.

Pets in Australia 2025 describes food as the largest portion of the $2,520, at $1,090. Moneysmart's matching category is "food and dietary supplements" at $1,214. The $124 gap is not published as its own line, so this site does not invent a supplements row.

First year, and why a bought puppy can pass $4,000

Moneysmart says a dog costs around $4,000 in the first year. The purchase averages are from Pets in Australia, among dogs obtained in the two years to March 2025 that the owner paid for: all dogs $1,419, purebred $1,551, designer $1,793, mixed breed around $900. About 25% of dogs were free. Of those who paid, the price included vaccination for 77%, microchipping for 60%, desexing for 33% and council registration for 35%.

The default buy path assumes desexing and puppy vaccines were not included. It adds a Lort Smith spey or castrate fee, depending on the sex you choose, and the Walkerville puppy 10-week C5 package at $363.90. The Grange microchip of $65 is added only in Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT. NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia require the seller to microchip before the sale or transfer, so that line is left off. Tick the inclusion box to drop the setup items that are still in the total. Adoption uses the RSPCA NSW fee, which already includes desexing, microchip, vaccination and a health check. Year-one vet work sits on top of the national vet average, which may already include some of it for some owners.

Registration

Registration is not inside the $2,520. NSW is once for the dog's life ($84, pensioner $37, plus $198 if the dog is not desexed, or $0 for a desexed dog from a pound, shelter or approved rehoming organisation). The fee page was updated 1 July 2026. The ACT registration fee is also once ($66.55, pensioner $25.05) and yearly renewal is free. An undesexed dog adds a $515.10 permit. Victoria uses Wyndham City Council ($63 desexed, $32 concession, $186 entire, $73 concession). The City of Melbourne $0 fee is for 2026–27 only and is not projected over a lifetime. A new Wyndham registration may be free for the first period. Brisbane charges a lower first year than the renewal, and pension recipients get 50% off the listed fees. Hobart charges no fee for a puppy registered before 6 months, then the annual fee. Perth uses the cheaper of the 1-year fee and the lifetime fee. Port Adelaide Enfield publishes seasonal 50% discounts that are not applied automatically. South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania each use one named council, not a statewide fee.

Insurance

Optional. Canstar, 14 September 2026, 2026 Pet Insurance Awards: small $1,580, medium $1,693, large $1,834, overall $1,718. Average premiums only, not a quote or a recommendation. Read the PDS and TMD before buying. No insurer is named or linked. The small-dog average excludes French Bulldogs. The article says French Bulldog cover can cost upwards of $4,000 a year on average. That floor is used and marked as an estimate. Cavoodles are described as among the cheapest, with no cavoodle dollar published, so the small-dog average is used. Canstar does not publish kilogram cut-points. This site uses the Animal Medicines Australia bands. Giant breeds use the large-dog premium. An older Canstar page prepared 17 March 2026 is not used.

Lifespan and weight

Breed medians are transcribed from the Dogs Trust PDF 'Life expectancy for 155 breeds and crossbred group', which reproduces Supplementary Table 3 of McMillan et al. 2024. The dogs were in the United Kingdom. No equivalent Australian breed-by-breed longevity table was found. Paper. Dogs Trust table.

Adult weight midpoint from the cited range. Small: up to 10 kg. Medium: over 10 kg to 25 kg. Large: over 25 kg to 45 kg. Giant: over 45 kg. These cut-points match the Animal Medicines Australia 2025 dog-size bands for small, medium and large. Giant is a display split of the large band so very heavy breeds are obvious. Canstar insurance uses small, medium and large only; giant uses the large-dog premium.

Designer crosses use the UK crossbreed median of 12.0 years (95% CI 12.0–12.1). Dogs Trust notes that crossbred includes designer breeds. That is not a published figure for the named cross, so it stays marked as an estimate. Parent medians are not averaged. Poodle varieties share the single Poodle median of 14.0 years, also marked as an estimate. Weights come from breed-standard ranges, mostly Wikipedia infoboxes checked 27 October 2026, plus a few FCI standards and article-text figures. They are not an Australian survey, and they are not dollar costs.
