Nightcliff Beach is a declared dog exercise area, so a dog may be off leash under effective control. Nightcliff Oval is prohibited. The oval is not this beach.

City of Darwin declares beaches under its care and control as dog exercise areas, except East Point Reserve, Gardens Oval One and Nightcliff Oval. A dog is under effective control off leash in a dog exercise area when it responds to a voice command, is not in season, and the owner is carrying a leash. Nightcliff Oval’s playing surface is a separate restriction area.

All year
All day: off leash. Outside those times: off leash.

On or within 10 metres of a shared path, and during organised sport, the dog must be on a lead. Markets, playgrounds and barbecues are restriction areas while they apply.

Council’s words

A dog is also considered under effective control when it is off-leash in a dog exercise area, provided that the dog is immediately responsive to a voice command of its owner.

Also on the council page

  • The council page does not set a crocodile or stinger rule. Box jellyfish are a summer risk in Darwin Harbour, and crocodiles live in these waters. This tool does not turn that into a dog rule. Check the beach signs and NT government safety advice before you go in the water.
  • A lead is required on or within 10 metres of a shared path, and while organised sport is in progress. Playgrounds, barbecues, and the Nightcliff market while it is operating, are restriction areas. The Northern Territory does not use daylight saving.

The map pin is a guide at -12.3780, 130.8450. It is not the boundary between groynes, access tracks or signed zones.
